Bank of China History Summary

Bank of China started its operations in 1912 in Shanghai. From 1912 to 1949, the Bank served consecutively as the country's central bank, international exchange bank and specialist foreign trade bank. In 1994 Bank of China was transformed from a specialist foreign exchange bank into a state-owned commercial bank.

In 1998 BOC International Holdings Ltd., the wholly-owned subsidiary of BOC specializing in investment banking, was located and incorporated in Hong Kong. This is the most internationalized investment bank established overseas by the Chinese banking industry.  In 2002 BOC Hong Kong (Holdings) was successfully listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Bank of China was ranked 11th among the world's top 1,000 banks by The Banker magazine in 2009.

Bank of China Banking Products and Services

Bank of China provides a comprehensive range of financial services to customers across the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and 29 overseas countries. The Bank's core business is commercial banking, including corporate banking, personal banking and financial markets services.


For individual clients BOC offers accounts, debit and credit cards, various loans, foreign exchange services, automatic banking and saving deposits. Some of the services are available by the phone, mobile or internet.

BOC operates corporate financing, trade financing and global market financing services. The group also provides financial advisory services for large-scale construction projects and corporate merger and acquisition and cash management, helping enterprises scientifically and soundly managing the position of cash account and balance of current deposit so as to improve liquidity and efficiency of fund.

Bank of China main divisions are: BOC International Holdings Limited (investments), BOC Group Insurance Co., Ltd. (insurance), BOC Investment Management Co., Ltd, (controlling subsidiary), BOC Investment Limited (direct investments and investment management) and  BOC Aviation Private Limited (aircraft leasing).
